Regular (20 hours per week) graduate assistantships and WVU
fellowships are accompanied by a waiver of full-time University tuition
(9 credits or more in the fall or spring terms, 6 credits or more in the
summer term). Partial (10 hours per week) graduate assistantships are
accompanied by a waiver of 5 credits of University tuition in the fall
and spring terms. These waivers cover the University tuition for
coursework required by students’ programs. Students with
regular assistantships or fellowships during the academic year (both
fall and spring terms) may also qualify for summer University tuition
waivers by request to the hiring unit (assistantships) or the office of
Graduate Education and Life (fellowships). Waiver forms must be
initiated by the hiring unit for assistantships and by the Office of
Graduate Education and Life for fellowships.
Some programs and courses restrict the use of waivers. Students
are responsible for determining if waivers can be used for particular
programs or courses before seeking a graduate assistantship (see the
section on Restrictions on Graduate Tuition Waivers).
