Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary field situated at the crossroads of sport sciences, counseling/clinical psychology, and sociology. Applied work with athletes is often aimed at helping them to grow and develop as they maneuver various challenges in sport and life. Amid a culture of “mental toughness,” however, reaching out for support is often construed as a sign of “weakness”. My current research and writing focuses on athletes’ personal growth, as well as overcoming the stigma that can sometimes prevent them from reaching out for personal or performance related support. I am also examining how sport psychology professionals integrate counseling theory and skills into their performance consultations. Ultimately, I hope to carry knowledge gained from these efforts into my long-term career goals of teaching, counseling, and sport psychology consulting.
