The forensic science pattern comparison areas, including fingerprints, footwear, and firearms, have been criticized for their subjective nature. While much research has attempted to move these disciplines to more objective methods, a majority of examiners are still coming to conclusions based on their own training and experience. My research is focused on determining the accuracy of forensic scientists when they compare cartridge cases found at a crime scene to test fired cartridge cases from a suspect firearm. In addition, insight into the methodologies of the examiners will be analyzed, not only to study the results of their examinations but also how their conclusions were reached.
