Arlen G. & Louise Stone Swiger Fellowships

Academic Program Nomination Due Date: Thursday, February 8, 2018, by 4:45 p.m. 

Arlen G. and Louise Stone Swiger Fellowships are designed to recruit highly competitive Ph.D. students to WVU. 
  • The Swiger Fellowship provides an annual stipend of $25,000, waiver of University tuition, a College tuition scholarship, payment of University fees, and graduate student health insurance coverage.
  • Awards are paid over a 12-month period during which time students must be enrolled full-time.
  • Awards provide up to three years of funding.
  • College/School  must agree to enter an annual cost share in the amount of $4,560 for all selected students.
  • Nominations must be submitted by an academic program; students cannot apply for this fellowship. Nominators should visit the Fellowships Nomination Information page for instructions on how to nominate students.

The nominee’s academic promise must be substantial. Fellowship nominations will be evaluated by a selection committee comprised of Graduate Council faculty representatives who will review all nominees based on the following criteria:

  • GPA;
  • Strength of graduate admissions application essay (if required for application) and standardized test score (if required for application);
  • Strength of graduate application letters of recommendation;
  • Strength of CV or resume;
  • Strength of letter of support from the academic program; and 
  • Strength of supplemental materials provided by department (if any).
