Fellowships and Scholarships

Each year, West Virginia University offers several fellowships to stellar incoming PhD students, as well as to other doctoral and MFA students for select fellowships. WVU also offers scholarships and fellowships to continuing PhD students and master’s level students. These fellowships and scholarships may provide students with stipends, tuition waivers, and/or research and travel support.  

Graduate Fellowships for Incoming Doctoral Students  

Students may not directly apply for graduate fellowships; students must be nominated by faculty members or a college/school for fellowships. Prospective graduate students who wish to be considered for the fellowships listed below must complete their graduate admissions application no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2019 (regardless of the academic program's application deadline). Students with completed applications and appropriate credentials may be nominated for any of the following fellowships by their prospective department. Arlen G. & Louise Stone Swiger Fellowships – 3-year fellowships awarded to incoming doctoral students

STEM Fellowships – 3-year fellowships awarded to incoming doctoral students in STEM fields

W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowships – 3-year fellowships awarded to incoming African-American doctoral and professional students, excluding those in the Health Sciences

University Provost Fellowships – 3-year fellowships awarded to incoming doctoral students

Ruby Distinguished Doctoral Fellowships – 3-year fellowships awarded to incoming doctoral students in STEM fields

Nominators should visit the Fellowship/Scholarship Nomination Information page for submission deadlines and instructions on how to nominate students. Faxed, e-mailed, or paper copies of fellowship nominations will not be accepted.

Fellowships and Scholarships for Continuing Graduate Students 

Outstanding Merit Fellowships for Continuing Doctoral Students – 1-year fellowships awarded to continuing doctoral students ( students may not apply for this fellowship; final  selections are made by  College/School Deans)

WVU Foundation Distinguished Doctoral Scholarships – scholarships awarded to doctoral candidates to defray education and research costs

Carl del Signore Foundation Graduate Scholarships – scholarships awarded to master’s students engaged in research activities

Summer Scholarships for Graduate Students

Humanities Summer Internships – scholarships awarded to doctoral students in the humanities to support participation in summer internship programs
