The fellowship nomination deadline for Swiger, STEMDu Bois, and  University Provost Fellowships is Sunday , February 10, 2019, no later than 11:59 p.m.

All incoming doctoral students who meet the minimum eligibility criteria for Swiger, STEM, Du Bois, and University Provost Fellowships and whos e department/program completes a nomination form may be considered for fellowship funding.  This year’s fellowship selection committee will review all nominations and assign nominees to a fellowship category; nominees with the highest scores will be awarded the top category of funding, and downward, until all fellowships are awarded. (The Office of Graduate Education and Life will determine the cut-off score for each funding category, which will be based on the quality of the aggregate pool of nominees.)

The fellowship categories are a) Category 1 (Swiger and STEM Fellowships), b) Category 2 (Du Bois Fellowship), and c) Category 3 (University Provost Fellowship).

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Students’ online graduate application materials will be used to evaluate fellowship nominations; therefore, departments/programs are encouraged to nominate only their most qualified applicants for all fellowships. The nominee’s academic promise must be substantial. The fellowship selection committee will evaluate nominees on the following criteria:

  1. GPA (minimum GPA for all nominees must be 3.2 for undergraduate or 3.5 for graduate course work).
  2. Strength of graduate admissions application essay (if required for admission to department/program) and standardized test scores (if required for admission to department/program).
  3. Strength of graduate application letters of recommendation.
  4. Strength of CV or resume.
  5. Strength of letter of support from the WVU program or faculty member making the nomination.

Given the decentralized structure of WVU’s graduate education enterprise, the Office of Graduate Education and Life (OGEL) fully recognizes that some departments/programs may not require the complete set of criteria listed above. Therefore, OGEL invites departments/programs that do not require all of these items to encourage highly recruited students, which it plans to nominate, to submit supplemental materials (e.g., personal statement, writing sample, letters of recommendations, CV/resume, photos of art work, etc.). Note that students  do not need to take a standardized test if it is not mandatory for admission to their prospective graduate program.
