Nomination: Swiger, STEM, Du Bois, and University Provost Fellowships

The fellowship nomination deadline for Swiger, STEMDu Bois, and  University Provost Fellowships is Sunday , February 9, 2020, no later than 11:59 p.m.

All incoming doctoral students who meet the minimum eligibility criteria for Swiger, STEM, Du Bois, and University Provost Fellowships and whose department/program completes a nomination form may be considered for fellowship funding. This year’s fellowship selection committee will review all nominations and assign nominees to a fellowship category; nominees with the highest scores will be awarded the top category of funding, and downward, until all fellowships are awarded. (The Office of Graduate Education and Life will determine the cut-off score for each funding category, which will be based on the quality of the aggregate pool of nominees.)

The fellowship categories are a) Category 1 (Swiger and STEM Fellowships), b) Category 2 (Du Bois Fellowship), and c) Category 3 (University Provost Fellowship).

Students’ online graduate application materials will be used to evaluate fellowship nominations; therefore, departments/programs are encouraged to nominate only their most qualified applicants for all fellowships. The nominee’s academic promise must be substantial. The fellowship selection committee will evaluate nominees on the following criteria:

  1. GPA (minimum GPA for all nominees must be 3.2 for undergraduate or 3.5 for graduate course work).
  2. Strength of graduate admissions application essay (if required for admission to department/program).
  3. Strength of graduate application letters of recommendation.
  4. Strength of CV or resume.
  5. Strength of letter of nomination from the WVU program or faculty member making the nomination.

Given the decentralized structure of WVU’s graduate education enterprise, the Office of Graduate Education and Life (OGEL) fully recognizes that some departments/programs may not require the complete set of criteria listed above. Therefore, OGEL invites departments/programs that do not require all of these items to encourage highly recruited students, which it plans to nominate, to submit supplemental materials (e.g., personal statement, writing sample, letters of recommendations, CV/resume, photos of art work, etc.). Note that students do not need to take a standardized test if it is not mandatory for admission to their prospective graduate program.

The college/school dean, department/program chair, graduate program director, or designee must submit all fellowship nominations.  Each college/school may submit up to 10 nominations. The department/program chair, graduate program director, or designee is charged with establishing procedures and deadlines for the consideration of nominations at the department/program level (as they deem necessary). Faculty members are encouraged to contact their department/program chair or graduate program director to learn the process for nominating students.

Graduate fellowship recipients are selected by faculty members who serve on the WVU Graduate Council and/or invited tenure-track graduate faculty members.

Nominations for Ruby, Swiger, STEM, Du Bois, and University Provost Fellowships must be submitted via the online   Fellowship Nomination Form. (NOTE: a nominator must only fill out this form once for their student to be considered for all available fellowships.) The following information is needed to complete an online fellowship nomination form:

  1. The nominee’s full name as it appears on graduate admissions materials.
  2. A brief letter/statement of nomination (maximum one page) from either the college/school representative or a faculty member in the college/school that outlines how the nominee will potentially contribute to the program’s mission.
  3. The college/school dean, graduate program director, or designee must complete the online nomination no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
