What is the Doctoral Scholars Program?
The goal of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) - State Doctoral Scholars Program is for more minority Ph.D. students to seek careers as faculty members on college campuses. The SREB offers annual stipends, tuition and fee waivers, networking, and professional development opportunities to support those in the program.

Since 1993, the program has supported more than 1,500 scholars who have attended over 100 institutions in 31 states.
Participating Institutions
West Virginia University, along with dozens of other institutions in the southeastern United States, participate in awarding and accepting scholars in the program annually. A list of current participating institutions can be found here.
Types of Awards
- Intended for students in their first year OR expecting admission before the academic year begins
- Up to five years of an annual $20,000 stipend
- Up to five years of an annual tuition and fees waiver (if allowed by institution)
- Professional development opportunities
- Intended for students who have completed all coursework AND
- Have or will have defended the dissertation prospectus before the academic year begins
- One year - $20,000 stipend
- One year - tuition and fees waiver (if allowed by institution)
- One time - $500 research allowance
- Professional development opportunities
Application Information
This program accepts new doctoral scholars annually. In 2020, the application window was from January 1st until March 31st.
