Outstanding Merit Fellowships for Continuing Doctoral Students

The Outstanding Merit Fellowship for Continuing Doctoral Students supports doctoral-level students who have completed at least one year of doctoral study. These fellowships will be awarded based on the student’s post-admission body of work (e.g., current grades, research, service to the WVU community, professional publications, etc.). Each academic year, no later than January, the Office of Graduate Education and Life contacts the Graduate Associate Dean/Designee(s) of any colleges that may award an Outstanding Merit Fellowship (please see rotation schedules below). 

Award Information

• The Outstanding Merit Fellowship for Continuing Doctoral Students provides an annual stipend of $17,000, waiver of University tuition, a College tuition scholarship, and graduate student health insurance. University fees are the responsibility of the student.
  
• Award stipends are paid over a 9-month period during which students must be enrolled full-time.
  
• Awards are for one academic year and are non-renewable.
• Students who are awarded this fellowship will be provided with a summer University tuition waiver (following the award year) by request only.

Eligibility

• Student must be enrolled as a full-time doctoral student.
• Student must be in good academic standing with their department/program.
• This fellowship is open to all students regardless of citizenship or residence status.

Selection Process

Selection of the Outstanding Merit Fellowship for Continuing Doctoral Students is at the discretion of the college/school and is based on doctoral students’ current academic performance. The spirit of this fellowship is to recognize and reward students who are succeeding at high levels, regardless of their incoming academic qualities.

Note: Final selections for the Outstanding Merit Fellowship for Continuing Doctoral Students must be submitted by the College Dean, Associate Dean, or designee; students cannot apply for these fellowships.
